40 x 30 cm, watercolour on vellum Rosaceae – a gift to the mankind Plants are one of the most interesting creatures on our planet. We are faced with an incredible variety of forms, complexity, life cycles and secondary metabolites. As primary producers, they supply all other living beings with food, vitamins and active substances and they form habitats for humans and animals. Some plants are more closely associated with human civilization than others. Two representatives of the "Rosaceae" plant family, which have been used by humans for a very long time, are presented here. They were first collected in the wild and later cultivated near settlements. The rose family comprises around 3000 members. Among them are an extraordinary number of ornamental, medicinal and fruit plants. The wild strawberry, with its bright red colour and sweet taste, symbolizes the beginning of summer and the abundance of nature. As one of the first fruits to ripen after winter, it is often associated with renewal and growth. Strawberries are not only a delicacy for the human taste palate, but also a source of vitamin C and antioxidants that contribute to human health.

30x40 cm, watercolour The salad burnet, perhaps less well known than other Rosaceae plants, plays an important role in the ecological diversity of meadow biotopes. As a food plant for various insect species, it contributes to the preservation of biodiversity. In folk medicine, it is valued for its anti-inflammatory properties. Its leaflets, with their cucumber-like flavour, are used in the preparation of salads and, traditionally in Germany, in the preparation of "Frankfurt green sauce", a traditional spring dish.
