This is a watercolor based on a graphite illustration I created as part of a series for the book "The Weeds" by Katy Simpson Smith. It shows the Goldenrod Gallfly Galls as seen during the Winter which is a prime food source for the Downy Woodpecker in North Carolina.

The 'Mule' Oak was a grand old White Oak that was originally planted next to the barn on our property to offer shade to the working mules many long years ago. It succumbed to old age and now only parts of it remain as it returns to the earth. This drawing is one of the many knots that are still visible surrounded by multitudes of fascinating textures and details.
