Gloria, the second painting in the series, depicts the flower of Hibiscus arnottianus subsp. immaculatus in full bloom. This species is very rare on its native Moloka'i (in Wainau, Waihanau, and Papalua valleys) perhaps reduced to a handful of specimens. From observation of cultivated specimens of this species on O'ahu and Hawai'i Island, there are wide-ranging morphological variations within the species. The white staminal column varies in length (8-19 cm long) and is densely or sparsely covered by tiny deep-purplish red glands towards the upper third of the staminal column. The tubular calyx is 1.5-3.4 cm long, and the petals 8-19 cm long are adnate basally. The flowers of Hibiscus arnottianus, as well as its subspecies, are weakly fragrant. All three representations in this series are x1.5 scale.
