Sophie Crossart is a representational watercolour artist and botanical illustrator whose work is deeply inspired by Nature. She finds beauty and meaning in the simple ways in which Nature presents itself and explores these with her brush.

Her work expresses her way of living in the presence of Nature, isolating those elements from Nature that strike her, and exploring emotions of wonder, humility, and gratitude. This often culminates in a focus on the ephemeral and awe-inspiring qualities of Nature, and a connection to themes as life and death and the human condition.

Each of Sophie’s paintings “grows” from pigments, paper and vellum in a slow and contemplative process, mirroring the way Nature creates life. The result is a highly detailed and tranquil style that maintains a distinct painterly quality and instills her works with life.

Sophie studied Art History in the Netherlands and Germany (BA & MA) and obtained her doctoral degree in Munich (Ph.D). Her work is informed by her academic background in the historical depiction of everyday life and the natural world. Sophie works in watercolour on paper and vellum, and also does illustrations in pen and ink. Her paintings reside in collections worldwide. She is based in Heidelberg, Germany and welcomes commissions and collaborations.
