The blue broomrape (Orobanche purpurea) is my third work in the series "Flora of Bredene". In Belgium they are listed as very rare and endangered, so I was very lucky to find 3 little specimens in our local nature reserve the Paelsteenpanne". At first glance I thought it was a very simple plant to illustrate, but when I took a closer look, I noticed it was entirely covered with tiny hairs. For a moment I hesitated to make its portrait, but then I quickly changed my mind because I know that one learns the most from difficult tasks. So I opted to use coloured pencil and an embossing tool and patiently worked days on end, drawing in the hairs and putting layer upon layer of different hues. I could not forget the host of the broomrape since it is a parasitic plant. The Achillea millefolium (Common Yarrow) is drawn in pencil.

SBA AWARD: Exhibiting Excellence in Depiction of Wild Flora. The Lizard orchid is very rare in Belgium, but last year I spotted two specimens in the nature reserve near to my home. I was lucky because I could follow its growth from the very beginning. It is a phenomenal orchid. First of all, its height is impressive and with its red tail-like lips the orchid looks a bit alien. It is said that it smells like a buck. I didn't smell anything, but I guess that pollinators are fond of it.
